The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 shatters the fragile security enjoyed by the European inhabitants of Shanghai's International Settlement. Eleven-year-old Jim becomes separated from his parents in the ensuing confusion and is interned in a Japanese camp for four years. But it is after the dropping of atomic bombs in 1945, when the surrender of the Japanese armies is imminent, that he is in most fear of his life.
