Peter Darwin, a young First Secretary in the Foreign Office, returns on leave from Tokyo, stopping briefly on the way in Miami where he becomes entangled in a fracas which sends him back to his childhood haunts He has to use all his diplomatic skills to unravel, not political shenanigans, but the cruel fates which befall racehorses The trick, he discovers, is not to suffer the same death.
